Terms of use
Last update: Oct. 14, 2026
Effective date: October 14, 2026
These terms apply to everyone who uses mathematicalanthropology.org (Kin & Number). By using the site you accept them. If you do not, please do not use the site.
Educational content
Kin & Number publishes explainers, worked examples, notes and interactive models about mathematics and computation in anthropology. They are written for learning and general interest.
Nothing on the site is professional advice. Our pieces on relatedness, cousin marriage, inheritance or DNA explain the arithmetic and summarize published research; they are not medical, genetic, legal or financial advice about your own family or situation. For decisions of that kind, talk to a qualified professional such as a genetic counselor, a physician or a lawyer.
Accuracy
We research each piece from published sources and check worked examples by hand, but mistakes happen, research moves on, and a piece reflects what was known when it was last updated. The site and everything on it are provided "as is", without any promise that they are complete, current or error-free. The interactive models use simplified assumptions and are meant to illustrate ideas, not to produce results you should rely on for anything important.
If you find an error, please tell us through the contact page. Our editorial policy explains how corrections are made.
Links to other sites
We link to books, journal articles, datasets, university pages and other resources. We do not control those sites and are not responsible for their content, availability or privacy practices. A link is a pointer to something useful, not a guarantee of it.
Affiliate links
Some links to books and shops are affiliate links, and we may earn a commission if you buy through them, at no extra cost to you. Any purchase is a transaction between you and the retailer, under the retailer's own terms. Commissions do not decide which books or sources we mention.
Copyright and reuse
Copyright in the text of Kin & Number, and whatever rights exist in its diagrams, tables and illustrations, belong to Kin & Number unless a credit says otherwise. Quotations from other works remain the property of their owners.
You are welcome to:
- read, print and save pages for your own study;
- link to any page;
- quote short passages, with credit to Kin & Number and a link to the page;
- use our worked examples and exercises in your own teaching, with credit.
Please do not republish whole pieces or large parts of them, copy the site systematically, or present our writing as your own. For any other use, ask through the contact page.
Using the site fairly
Do not try to get into the site's editing area, interfere with its security or normal operation, or send automated traffic heavy enough to slow it down for other readers. Do not use the contact form to send spam, advertising, or unlawful or abusive material; such messages may be deleted without a reply.
Limitation of liability
To the fullest extent the law allows, Kin & Number and the people who write and run it are not liable for any loss or damage arising from your use of the site, its content or the sites it links to, including indirect or consequential loss. Some jurisdictions do not allow certain limitations, so parts of this section may not apply to you.
Changes to these terms
We may update these terms from time to time. The effective date at the top shows when they last changed, and continued use of the site after a change means you accept the new version.
Governing law
These terms are governed by the laws that apply where Kin & Number is operated, without regard to conflict-of-law rules. If any part of these terms is found unenforceable, the rest stays in effect.
