Cookie policy
Last update: Oct. 14, 2026
Effective date: October 14, 2026
A cookie is a small text file that a website asks your browser to store, so that the site can recognize the browser on a later visit. Cookies can be harmless and necessary, such as keeping you signed in, or they can be used to follow people around the web. This page lists the ones that matter on Kin & Number.
Cookies we set
None for readers. Kin & Number has no analytics, no advertising networks, no social media buttons and no preference cookies. You can read every page with cookies switched off.
The one cookie of our own belongs to the editing area. When a member of the team signs in, the site sets a session cookie that keeps them signed in. It is strictly necessary for that purpose, cannot be read by scripts on the page, is sent only over encrypted connections, and expires after 24 hours or as soon as they sign out. Readers never receive it.
Every cookie at a glance
| Cookie | Set by | Who gets it | What it is for | How long it lasts |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Staff session | Kin & Number | team members who sign in | keeping them signed in to the editing area | up to 24 hours, or until sign-out |
| Security check | the network provider that protects the site | visitors who trigger a check against automated traffic | telling people apart from bots | short-lived |
| Affiliate referral | Amazon (Amazon Associates program), CJ Affiliate and similar partners | only readers who click an affiliate link | recording that a visit came from Kin & Number so a commission can be credited | set by the partner; see its policy |
Affiliate cookies deserve a word more. They are not set while you read Kin & Number. They are set by the retailer or network after you click a book or shop link and leave our site, and they are governed by that company's own cookie and privacy policies. If you never click an affiliate link, you never receive one.
How to control cookies
Every major browser lets you see, block and delete cookies. Look in its settings under privacy or site data. You can:
- block third-party cookies, which stops most cross-site tracking, including affiliate cookies set through redirects;
- delete cookies after each session, or browse in a private window, which discards cookies when it closes;
- allow or block cookies for individual sites.
Blocking cookies does not change how Kin & Number works for readers. Blocking affiliate cookies only means a purchase you make will not be credited to us.
Because we do not track readers, there is nothing on our side for a Do Not Track or Global Privacy Control signal to switch off. Your browser may still send those signals to other sites you visit.
Changes and questions
If the cookies used on the site change, we will update this page and its effective date. More about how we handle information is in the privacy policy. Questions go through the contact page.
